Within the framework of the Joint Working Group on the Post-analytical Phase of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) and the European Organisation for External Quality Assurance Providers in Laboratory Medicine (EQALM), ECAT participated in a study in which the relationship between pre-test probabilities estimated by clinicians using two case histories and how the same clinicians’ categorized the patients into low, moderate or high probability of VTE or into unlikely or likely VTE was investigated. Also the clinicians’ perception of diagnostic accuracy of D-dimer by calculating the likelihood ratios based upon their estimated pre- and post-test probabilities was investigated.

Conclusion of the study:
The clinicians estimated the diagnostic accuracy (LR) of the D-dimer test for VTE in line with what is found in the literature, but the clinicians estimated a too high pre-test probability which also resulted in a too high post-test probability.
